The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning for Karachi residents about three heatwave spells expected in May and June. Temperatures could reach up to 40 degrees Celsius by May 30th.

Karachi Heatwave Alert

Immediate Forecast: In the next two weeks, Karachi will see a significant temperature rise, with daytime highs frequently reaching the high 30s. Peak Heat: The most intense heat is expected towards the end of May, with temperatures possibly hitting 40 degrees Celsius by May 30th, according to the NDMA.

Tips to Stay Safe During the Heatwave

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Limit outdoor activities between 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Wear Light Clothing: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to stay cool.
  • Use Sunscreen: Apply high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays.
  • Stay Indoors: Remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day, using fans or air conditioning.
  • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure children, the elderly, and pets are safe and hydrated.

Impact on Daily Life

The heatwaves could disrupt daily life, particularly for those without proper cooling. Increased air conditioning use might strain the power grid, potentially causing power outages.

Health professionals recommend taking precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and dehydration. Watch for symptoms such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, headache, and nausea, and seek medical help if these occur.

Stay updated with weather reports and advisories from the NDMA and local news sources. By taking proactive measures, Karachi residents can reduce the impact of the extreme heat.
