Birmingham: Fans eagerly awaiting the blockbuster cricket showdown at the World Champions of Legends 2025 were left disappointed as the much-anticipated Pakistan vs. India match was canceled today.
According to sources, the Indian team withdrew from the fixture, citing disagreements over participation of certain Pakistani players, notably former captain Shahid Afridi. Indian officials reportedly stated that they would not compete if Afridi or other selected Pakistani players were part of the lineup.
This decision was further fueled by reports of personal tensions among key Indian players, including Yousuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, and Harbhajan Singh, who declined to participate due to longstanding rivalries and differences.
Tournament organizers, WCL, confirmed that all other scheduled matches will proceed without interruption. Fans who purchased tickets for the canceled match are eligible for full refunds.
The Pahalgam attack has significantly heightened India-Pakistan tensions and widened the diplomatic rift between the two nations.
Meanwhile, the World Championship of Legends (WCL), an independent cricket tournament featuring retired players, operates outside the jurisdiction of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), limiting the BCCI’s influence over player participation.
The India Champions team, captained by Yuvraj Singh, boasts prominent players such as Suresh Raina and Piyush Chawla. Their Pakistani counterparts feature renowned cricketers like Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, and Shoaib Malik.
The India Champions were scheduled to face Pakistan Champions today at Edgbaston, Birmingham, as part of the ongoing WCL 2025. However, the Indian squad faced significant setbacks, with several key players—including Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, and Suresh Raina—choosing to withdraw from the match.
As a result, the highly anticipated fixture was canceled. This match was notable as it would have been the first cricketing encounter between India and Pakistan since the Pahalgam attack in April 2025, making it a highly sensitive and politically charged event.
In light of the prevailing political tensions, these former Indian internationals opted to withdraw, emphasizing the complex interplay between sports and diplomacy.
