The ECB has imposed a five-year prohibition on him from participating in UAE leagues following his contract termination with them.
Initially offered a retainer contract with the opportunity to play for the UAE cricket team, Usman opted to wear the green jersey of Pakistan instead and was chosen for Pakistan’s T20I squad against New Zealand.
Despite his initial performances against the Black Caps not meeting expectations, Usman remains unswerving and without regrets about his decision.
“I have come into the Pakistan team on the back of performances, so I don’t think about the past,” Usman conveyed to the media on Sunday in Lahore.
“I am grateful that I am getting an opportunity to play for Pakistan. I have no regrets on my decision,” he further added.
He expressed appreciation for the chance to play for Pakistan and stressed his dedication to adjusting to the team’s needs without feeling any pressure.
“There is no pressure on me as I played according to the plans given to me. I stay true to my game and perform according to team’s requirements. I have no issue batting at any number,” Usman stated.
Following the series against New Zealand, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam discussed Usman Khan’s progress, acknowledging the obstacles the young player is encountering. Babar observed that Usman has made every effort to perform well and the kind of intent he demonstrated is a positive indicator.
“See, you have to give margin. The thing about the Pakistan team is that there is pressure. I know that Usman has left so many things, so all of that would be in the back of his mind. But he has made every effort. Look, as a player, whenever you make a debut, you try to stabilize your innings after 2 innings, but the kind of intent he showed, which was also required from him. Performing is not in anyone’s control. On the day that it is your day, you will perform,” Babar commented.
Pakistan triumphed over New Zealand on Saturday to draw the five-match Twenty20 International series in Lahore. The series ended with a 2-2 tie, with Pakistan winning the second and fifth T20Is and New Zealand clinching victories in the third and fourth matches. The first match in Rawalpindi was cancelled due to rain, resulting in no result.
