India secured a dominant 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test at Perth Stadium, after taking two key wickets on day four to leave the hosts struggling at 104 for five, still trailing by 429 runs.
Resuming their innings at 12-3, Australia lost Usman Khawaja early for just four, mistiming a delivery from Mohammed Siraj to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
Harshit Rana followed up with a fiery spell, unsettling Steve Smith and then troubling Travis Head, who top-scored for Australia with 63 not out. Head’s innings included a ramp shot for four over Pant, marking his 17th half-century.
Despite Head's efforts, Siraj had Smith caught behind for 17, further shifting the balance in India's favour. Earlier in the match, India’s batting had set the tone, despite being bowled out for just 150 on day one.
They then bowled Australia out for a mere 104, with Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring centuries to lift India to a massive 487-6 declared, setting Australia a daunting target of 534.
With Mitchell Marsh on five not out alongside Head, Australia’s chase was quickly extinguished. India’s victory by 295 runs marks their fifth consecutive series win over Australia, highlighting their resilience after a tough 3-0 loss to New Zealand earlier this month.
