Afridi, while addressing the press in London following the match between Pakistan and South Africa champions, highlighted the unique opportunities afforded to Babar Azam, the current captain.
“No captain has ever had such a clear opportunity. Usually, the captain is the first to be dismissed right after the World Cup ends,” Afridi remarked.
He drew favorable comparisons between Babar Azam’s leadership and that of previous captains, including himself, Younis Khan, and Misbah-ul-Haq, noting that Azam has been given plenty of chances to establish himself.
“We’ve led the team too, like myself, Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq, but Babar has had sufficient opportunities. Let’s make one decisive move and back him wholeheartedly with whatever he brings,” he advocated.
Regarding the dismissal of Razzaq and Wahab from the selection committee, Afridi expressed bewilderment, referring to the decision as an incomprehensible “surgery.”
“To be honest, this kind of surgery is beyond my comprehension,” he stated.
The removal of former cricketers Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from Pakistan’s selection committee comes in the wake of Pakistan’s underwhelming showing at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where they did not advance past the group stage.
On Wednesday morning, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) verified the news with a formal announcement, stating, “It has notified Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz that their services will no longer be required in the national selection committee setup.”
The PCB also mentioned that it would soon provide updates regarding the new composition of the selection committee.
