During the Supreme Court hearing on the case against the overloading of heavy vehicles, Justice Jamal Mandokhail highlighted that the real issue behind the increase in accidents is the enforcement of the law.
A five-member constitutional bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, conducted the hearing on the case regarding the overloading of heavy vehicles.
Barrister Zafarullah, the counsel, stated that the core issue lies at the loading points, emphasizing that unless action is taken against these locations, the problem cannot be controlled.
Justice Jamal Mandokhail remarked, "The number of fatalities caused by accidents is higher than those due to terrorism or diseases. Does the government have data on accident-related deaths? The real issue is the enforcement of the law."
Justice Hassan Azhar pointed out that "the roads in Port Qasim, Korangi, and the industrial area have potholes as deep as two feet, leading to accidents."
The government lawyer stated that several laws had been amended to increase penalties.
Justice Aminuddin Khan remarked, "We will issue a detailed order on this case, and it will remain pending."
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar emphasized that the issue of overloading must be resolved in collaboration with provincial governments and all stakeholders.
Subsequently, the hearing was adjourned for an Indefinite period.
