According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Pakistan recorded a complete 100% reduction in wheat imports during the first four months of the current financial year compared to the same period last year.
From July to October 2023-24, the country spent $166.633 million on importing over 556,903 metric tons of wheat, but no wheat imports were recorded during the same months of the current financial year.
In contrast, imports of pulses declined by 7.27%, with 430,177 metric tons valued at $287.837 million imported, compared to 516,666 metric tons worth $321.140 million in the same period last year.
However, fertilizer imports surged significantly by 121.36% during July-October 2024, with 612,622 metric tons valued at $374.876 million imported, up from 334,675 metric tons worth $169.262 million in the corresponding period of 2023.
Similarly, imports of medicinal products rose by 18.59%, amounting to 12,441 metric tons worth $406.452 million, compared to 25,312 metric tons valued at $342.730 million during the same period last year.
On the other hand, insecticide imports dropped by 31.49%, with imports recorded at 8,717 metric tons worth $44.831 million, down from 13,226 metric tons valued at $65.441 million in the same period of 2023.
Additionally, agricultural machinery imports witnessed a sharp increase of 70.92%, totaling $39.616 million compared to $23.178 million in the corresponding months of the previous year.
