Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday praised his economic team after Pakistan recorded a current account surplus of $1.2 billion in March 2025, the highest in the country’s history.
In his statement, the Prime Minister said this surplus shows that the economy is becoming more stable.
He mentioned that in the first nine months of the current financial year, the total current account surplus reached $1.85 billion. He said these positive signs are proof that the government’s economic policies are working in the right direction.
PM Shehbaz credited this achievement to record-breaking remittances from overseas Pakistanis, rising exports, and the hard work of the government’s economic team. He added that the government is focused on achieving long-term growth for the country’s economy.
Earlier, the State Bank of Pakistan reported the $1.2 billion current account surplus for March 2025, which is a huge jump compared to the $363 million surplus recorded in the same month last year. This is a 230 percent increase on a year-on-year basis.
Khurram Shehzad, advisor to the Finance Minister, said that with lower oil prices and strong remittance inflows, Pakistan’s current account is expected to stay in surplus through the end of the financial year and possibly into the next year. He said this will help boost investor confidence.
At the same time, the government has decided to digitize the national economy. All ministries have been asked to start working on this shift.
The decision was made in a high-level meeting in Islamabad, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The Prime Minister ordered the formation of a special working group to make sure the digitization efforts are carried out and monitored properly.
He said that improving the economy and reducing the size of the informal sector are important parts of the government's reform plans.
He also said that reforms are being introduced in a coordinated and organized way to make sure they last and bring real change.
