ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that the next 48 hours are extremely critical due to the rising risk of flooding in the Ravi River.
According to NDMA, heavy rains in the upper catchment areas and the near-full capacity of India’s Thein Dam have created a serious flood threat. Sources say the dam has reached 97% of its storage limit, and its spillways could be opened at any time. If that happens, water flow in the Ravi River could rise to dangerous levels.
NDMA’s latest report states that the water flow at Jassar has already reached 115,000 cusecs and could increase to 150,000 cusecs within the next 24 hours. At Shahdara, the flow is currently 50,150 cusecs but may surge to 90,000 cusecs if water is released from Thein Dam.
The authority also warned that streams coming from the Pir Panjal Range, including Bein, Basantar, and Dek, could face flash flooding due to intense rainfall.
NDMA has placed all departments and emergency services on high alert to deal with any possible emergency. It has also urged citizens to stay away from rivers, streams, and low-lying areas and to avoid unnecessary travel.
People are advised to follow official updates through TV, radio, mobile alerts, and the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” app.
