In a significant move for Karachi residents, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced that starting August 1, people will have to pay for underground water usage.
This decision involves installing digital water meters across the city to track water consumption.
According to KMC’s plan, these meters will be installed in various locations, including shops, restaurants, schools, hotels, and factories.
Large residential buildings, such as apartments and housing societies, will also have these meters. However, individual houses will be excluded from this new system, at least for now.
Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, shared that the city expects to generate about 1 billion rupees annually from this initiative.
This revenue will help manage the vast amounts of water—about 550 million gallons a day—that Karachi consumes.
The mayor also addressed the ongoing issue with water tankers. Karachi heavily relies on these tankers, with 5,500 of them delivering water across the city.
To tackle water theft, 3,200 of these tankers have already been registered, with plans to register the remaining 2,300 soon.
For many Karachiites, this new system represents a significant change. Water has always been freely accessible, but with digital meters tracking every drop, conserving water will become crucial.
Businesses and residents are preparing to adapt to this change and understand its impact on their daily water usage and expenses.
