Karachi heatwave, June 2024: causes, effects, and safety measures

Karachi is likely to experience continued intense heat over the next three days. This forecast follows a day of above-normal temperatures due to the cessation of sea breeze.

The Edhi Foundation has reported receiving 300 bodies over the last three days, with most deaths attributed to heatstroke.

Understanding Heatwaves

A heatwave is a period of unusually hot weather that lasts for two or more days. Major causes include climate change, urbanization, and deforestation.

Heatwaves occur when a high-pressure area in the upper atmosphere strengthens and remains over a region. Extreme heat is the deadliest climate hazard, killing more people per year than any other climate-related event.

Tips to Stay Safe During a Heatwave

Do’s:
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Utilize shade by using hats and umbrellas.
  • Stay in the shade as much as possible.
  • Block direct sunlight from your living spaces.
Don’ts:
  • Avoid hot beverages and spicy foods.
  • Avoid outdoor activities, especially between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Don’t leave pets outside.
Following these tips from the Pakistan Meteorological Department can help people stay safe during the ongoing heatwave in Karachi.
