Islamabad: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan has approved the appointment of new Chief Justices for Islamabad and Peshawar High Courts.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, is currently underway to finalize appointments for the permanent Chief Justices of four high courts: Islamabad, Peshawar, Sindh, and Balochistan.
So far, the commission has approved Justice Sarfraz Dogar as the new Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court and Justice Atiq Shah as the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court.

The Secretary of the Judicial Commission has written a letter to the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary, officially informing the government of the approved names.The letter calls upon the Prime Minister to finalize the appointment process following Article 175-A(8) of the Constitution.
The commission is also reviewing three senior judges for each of the remaining two courts. For the Sindh High Court, the names under consideration were Justice Junaid Ghaffar, Justice Zafar Rajput, and Justice Iqbal Kalhoro. For the Balochistan High Court, the candidates were Justice Rozi Khan Bareech, Justice Kamran Mallakhail, and Justice Iqbal Kasi.
The Judicial Commission consists of 13 regular members, but the number increases to 16 when appointing Chief Justices of High Courts. A minimum of 9 votes is required for an appointment to be approved.
Key members include the Chief Justice of Pakistan, four Supreme Court judges, the Attorney General, two government and two opposition representatives. Bar Council representative Ahsan Bhoon and National Assembly Speaker’s nominee Roshan Khursheed Bharucha are also participating. Additionally, the provincial law minister, a bar representative, and a retired judge are included in the decision-making for each province.
