Authorities in Kotli have issued an alert about the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that can be especially dangerous for children and the elderly. The Kotli Health Department has advised the public to take precautions to prevent infection.
HMPV mainly causes respiratory illnesses, with symptoms similar to the flu and COVID-19, such as fever, cough, and congestion. The health advisory urges people to avoid crowded places, maintain social distancing, and wear masks, as there is currently no vaccine available for this virus.
Concerns about HMPV have been rising globally, especially after its recent spread in China. The virus is most active in late winter and spring and often circulates alongside other respiratory infections.
HMPV was first identified in 2001 in the Netherlands, though it had been present among humans for decades before its discovery. It belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and is closely related to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
Recently, three cases of HMPV were reported in India. Two cases were found in Bengaluru, where a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy tested positive. The third case was reported in Gujarat. All three children are currently receiving treatment in hospitals and are in stable condition.
Health experts continue to stress the importance of preventive measures to minimize the risk of infection and protect vulnerable groups.
