The long wait is finally over as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz launched Pakistan’s first urban electric train, the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT), and took an experimental ride on it herself. She personally monitored the trial run from Ali Town to Muslim Town.
During her visit, she inspected the train, checked its onboard facilities, and observed how it performed during its test run through regular city traffic.
Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan gave a full briefing on the train's features, how it works, and how it will benefit the public. People living along Raiwind Road and Canal Road were happy and excited to see the sleek, modern train during its first run.

The Super Autonomous Rapid Transit is already being used in countries like Turkey, China, and Abu Dhabi. It has three carriages, with the option to add a fourth, and was developed by Norinco International. The train can carry up to 320 passengers and can travel as far as 40 kilometres on one charge.
The fully electric train is air-conditioned and includes modern features. It’s designed to be eco-friendly, helping to cut down pollution and reduce traffic problems in the city.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that every day brings good news for the people of Punjab. She added that the new SRT will make Lahore more beautiful and attractive. She also announced that similar SRT projects are being planned for Gujranwala and Faisalabad, marking the start of a new era of modern and sustainable transport across Punjab.
