- WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is testing a new feature to show when someone was last online.
- This feature includes a list of recently active contacts for easier tracking of online activity.
- The "recently online" tab will display a limited number of frequently contacted individuals.
According to reports, WhatsApp's new feature will not only indicate when someone was last online but also display a list of recently active contacts. This change aims to make it easier for users to determine when their contacts were active on the platform.
Furthermore, users will notice a new tab within WhatsApp's interface labeled "recently online." This tab will show a "limited number of recent active contacts," as opposed to a comprehensive list of all contacts online. This suggests that WhatsApp is using an algorithm to select and display the most frequently contacted individuals in this specific list.
The "recently online" feature was first observed on WhatsApp for Android version 2.24.9.14. However, it remains unclear whether this feature will be rolled out to all users worldwide or remain in the testing phase.

In terms of privacy considerations, it is reasonable to assume that if a user opts to turn off their last online status, others will not be able to view their activity information. This move reflects WhatsApp's commitment to maintaining user privacy while introducing new features to enhance the messaging experience.
