Karachi Braces for Severe Heatwave: Hospitals Overwhelmed As Temperature Hit 41°C

  • Karachi is experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius.
  • Jinnah Hospital's heatstroke ward is fully operational to manage the influx of patients.
  • Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz warns of a continued heatwave for the next two days.
Karachi is once again in the grip of a severe heatwave as temperatures soar to 41 degrees Celsius, sparking a surge in heat-related illnesses and straining medical facilities across the city. Over the past four days, more than 70 individuals have been admitted to Civil and Jinnah Hospitals due to the extreme heat, highlighting the urgent need for heatwave management measures.

Impact on Residents

The ongoing heatwave has had a profound impact on the residents of Karachi, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Civil Hospital has reported a significant influx of heat-affected patients, with 67 cases brought to their emergency department. Dr. Nizam, Assistant Medical Superintendent at Civil Hospital, noted that while most patients were discharged after stabilizing, three individuals required hospital admission. Thankfully, none of these cases were classified as heatstroke, indicating early intervention and effective medical care.

Jinnah Hospital has also faced challenges due to the heatwave, admitting 12 patients over the last four days and three on the most recent day alone. The emergency incharge at Jinnah Hospital affirmed that their heatstroke ward is fully operational to handle the increasing number of patients seeking treatment.

Weather Forecast and Precautions

Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz has issued a warning that Karachi will continue to experience a partial heatwave for the next two days. The recent shift in wind patterns has exacerbated the heat, intensifying the already challenging conditions. However, there is hope on the horizon, as temperatures are expected to decrease after this two-day period. Additionally, the anticipated onset of the monsoon season in the first week of July is a promising sign, offering much-needed relief from the relentless heatwave.

In light of these developments, residents are advised to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours, wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and seeking immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

  • Wear Light Clothing: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Use fans and air conditioners to keep your living space cool.
  • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure elderly and sick family members are safe and comfortable.
