LAHORE: Pakistan experienced a significant decline in cotton arrivals last year, with a drop exceeding 33% as of December 31, according to the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).
The total cotton arrivals in the country stood at 5.452 million bales in 2024, compared to 8.171 million bales recorded in the previous year, representing a 33.27% reduction in production. Both Punjab and Sindh, key cotton-producing regions, reported steep declines, with a combined decrease of 2.719 million bales.
Punjab’s cotton output fell sharply by 34.81%, producing only 2.659 million bales compared to 4.079 million bales last year. Similarly, Sindh recorded a decline of 31.74%, with production dropping to 2.793 million bales from 4.092 million bales in 2023.
The report emphasizes the impact of this considerable reduction on the textile industry. To bridge the production gap, over $2 billion worth of cotton imports will be required, further straining the national exchequer.
