US Military KC-135 disappears near Qatar after emergency alert

A US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker, widely known as a “flying gas station,” disappeared from radar after declaring an in-flight emergency near Qatar, prompting concern among military and aviation observers.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, while the aircraft was operating over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most sensitive maritime corridors.

According to flight tracking data the tanker had departed from Al Dhafra Air Base before transmitting a “7700” squawk code, the internationally recognized emergency signal used by pilots to indicate a general onboard emergency.

Shortly before its transponder signal was lost the aircraft was observed flying in a circular holding pattern a maneuver commonly used by pilots while assessing technical difficulties or troubleshooting operational problems. It was later seen descending in the direction of Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

US military authorities have not issued an official statement confirming whether the aircraft crashed, landed safely or experienced another form of emergency. However the sudden disappearance of the radar signal has drawn international attention and triggered widespread speculation regarding the aircraft’s status.

Aviation experts say several factors could explain the incident including mechanical malfunction, communication failure, or possible GPS jamming in the region.
