Gaza now holds the grim record of having the highest number of child amputees per capita globally, as reported by the United Nations.
The crisis stems from over a year of intense conflict between Israel and Palestinian factions in the region.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking through his deputy at a Cairo conference focused on boosting humanitarian aid to Gaza, described the situation as "appalling and apocalyptic."
He highlighted the suffering of children, many of whom have lost limbs and undergone surgeries without anesthesia.
"The war has left Gaza with the highest per capita rate of child amputees in the world," Guterres stated. "Children are undergoing limb amputations without even basic pain relief."
Severe Humanitarian Crisis and Alleged International Crimes
Guterres warned that conditions in Gaza could amount to some of the "gravest international crimes." He cited widespread malnutrition, a looming famine, and the collapse of the territory's healthcare system. “Malnutrition is rampant, famine is imminent, and the health infrastructure is in complete disarray,” he said.
The Secretary-General also criticized severe restrictions on humanitarian aid, calling current levels of assistance "grossly insufficient." UN data revealed that only 65 aid trucks entered Gaza daily in the past month, compared to a pre-conflict average of 500.
Aid Restrictions and International Accountability
Guterres condemned the blockade on aid delivery, stating, "This is not a logistical issue but a crisis of political will and respect for international humanitarian law." He emphasized the critical role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in providing essential services to Palestinians.
Despite repeated attempts, UNRWA reported being unable to deliver aid to northern Gaza between October 6 and November 25 due to intense fighting and blocked access. Guterres warned that if UNRWA were forced to cease operations, Israel would bear full responsibility for replacing its services.
Calls for Immediate Action
As the conflict continues, the international community faces increasing pressure to address Gaza's escalating humanitarian crisis. Aid agencies have repeatedly sounded the alarm, warning that civilians are on the brink of famine and that the situation demands urgent global intervention.
