WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump announced plans to meet with New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, at the White House on Friday, November 21st.
Trump shared the news via his social media platform, Truth Social, describing Mamdani as the "Communist Mayor of New York City" and confirming the scheduled Oval Office meeting.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, became the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor after defeating incumbent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in this month’s election.
His campaign focused heavily on affordability and social services, positioning him as a progressive challenger. During the campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized Mamdani, branding him a "communist" and warning that federal funding could be at risk if Mamdani took office.
Despite the rhetoric, Trump indicated a potential thaw, stating that he and Mamdani might "work something out." Mamdani has previously expressed willingness to meet Trump but emphasized that any engagement should prioritize the interests of New Yorkers.
The upcoming meeting marks a notable shift in tone, with Trump calling it "long-awaited" and a possible sign of détente between the former president and the progressive mayor-elect. Mamdani, who is set to officially take office in January.
