TEHRAN: Pakistan and Iran signed several agreements on Monday to enhance trade and cooperation, particularly in the agricultural sector.
During his visit to Iran, Pakistan’s Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, led the delegation and attended a high-level ministerial meeting.
He announced that Iran has agreed to buy a large share of rice from Pakistan, while the hurdles in exporting Pakistani mangoes will also be removed soon. Iran has also shown interest in importing 60% of its meat needs and corn from Pakistan.
Both sides also decided to boost research cooperation between the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and Iranian institutions, and to speed up customs clearance to make agricultural trade easier.
Rana Tanveer Hussain further shared that Pakistan and Iran will sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) soon. For this, a joint committee will meet every six months to ensure progress and implementation of the decisions taken during the visit.
Earlier this month, during Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkia’s visit to Pakistan, both countries signed and exchanged 12 agreements and MoUs in different areas. These included cooperation in plant protection, trade via the Mirjaveh-Taftan border gate, science and technology, information technology, culture, arts, youth exchange, meteorology, maritime safety, air services, product certification, tourism (2025–27), and judicial assistance.
