Bangladesh's interim government has raised concerns over reports of a visa extension granted to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, despite the cancellation of her passport on January 7, 2024, according to official statements.
The government stressed that visa validity typically ends with passport cancellation, responding to media claims that Hasina’s visa status in India, where she is currently residing, has been extended.
The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh has issued arrest warrants against Hasina, who is facing 31 legal cases, including 26 related to loss of life and 4 alleging genocide.
These cases stem from investigations into disappearances and casualties during her tenure as prime minister.
Hasina left for India following a political transition that saw her government replaced by an interim administration.
The situation has added complexity to diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India, with the interim government emphasizing that all legal processes must adhere to established international and domestic protocols.
