Cauchi's family contacted Queensland Police after recognizing him in footage of the incident. Queensland officers have been in communication with the family, who last interacted with Cauchi in March.
Unemployed and lacking a permanent address, Cauchi lived in various locations, including Brisbane, Kangaroo Point, Carina, the Gold Coast, and with his family in south Queensland before moving to Sydney.
Despite publicly presenting himself as an English tutor on social media, Cauchi was leading a double life, engaging on escort websites such as Australia Cracker, Empire Escorts, and Escorts Australia as a male escort, offering explicit services.
His online profiles, established around June 2023, were later removed from the websites following his demise.
Cauchi's online presence portrayed him as an English tutor on Facebook, where he shared updates about his hobbies, including surfing and gun shooting. He engaged in various Facebook groups, seeking companionship and sharing his interests.
However, his online activities received backlash from the public following confirmation of his identity by the police.
Reports suggested Cauchi struggled with schizophrenia, contributing to the complexity of his circumstances.
