McClish had set out on the hike following a friend's suggestion to visit a granite outcropping. He did not inform anyone of his plans and carried only a few supplies. When he failed to return for Father’s Day dinner on June 16, he was declared missing, prompting a massive search effort involving around 300 personnel from various emergency agencies.
What began as a brief hike turned into a harrowing 10-day ordeal. McClish became disoriented due to landmarks being destroyed by recent wildfires. He survived by drinking water from waterfalls using his boot and eating wild berries. "I left with a pair of pants, my hiking shoes, a hat, a flashlight, and a pair of folding scissors like a Leatherman tool— and that was about it," McClish recounted.
Despite the challenging conditions, including cold nights and difficult navigation, McClish managed to stay hydrated and maintain hope. He constantly called out for help and dreamed of a proper meal. His efforts paid off when he noticed boot and paw prints of rescuers, leading to his eventual rescue in Big Basin State Park.
McClish, though sore and hoarse, did not suffer any serious injuries. Reflecting on his experience, he described it as both humbling and awesome. The successful rescue highlights the importance of preparedness and the dedication of search and rescue teams.
