After almost two years without a major update, Windows 11 is preparing for a significant overhaul with the release of the 24H2 update. While the previous 23H2 update introduced only a clock for security updates without affecting the operating system, the new 24H2 version promises a host of new features and improvements.
The 24H2 update will roll out in phases to users currently running 22H2 or 23H2. Among the new features is a revamped Energy-Saver mode, which replaces the old Battery Saver function, support for USB4 2.0 ports offering speeds up to 80 Gbps, and WiFi 7 compatibility. Users will also notice new text labels in the right-click context menu for common functions like copy-paste and enhanced customization options for Quick Settings.
Additional updates include a redesigned Recall Feature, an improved search function, and the introduction of a Super Resolution feature in the Photos app to enhance blurry images. The Paint app will also see updates with generative fill and other creative tools.
However, to access some of these features, users will need to enroll in the Copilot+ program, which requires eligible devices with a minimum of 16 GB RAM, 256 GB storage, and a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS).
Aside from these feature updates, Microsoft is also rolling out updates to the compiler kernel and scheduler, along with performance and compatibility improvements for Prism, its new Arm-to-x86 translation layer. This update has been available on the Windows Insider release page since May and is stable enough for daily use.
The 24H2 update maintains the same system requirements as previous versions, meaning PCs from 2018 and newer can still run it. However, the requirements for unsupported installs have increased, with 24H2 now only booting on 64-bit PCs that support the SSE 4.2 instruction set. This cuts off older CPUs like the Intel Core 2 and some AMD models, which could previously run older versions of Windows 11.
