The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an important warning for WhatsApp users, saying accounts linked to certain SIMs may stop working. These include SIMs that are inactive, blocked, deactivated or not properly registered.
The regulator asked users to quickly check the number linked to their WhatsApp accounts. It said users should ensure their WhatsApp number is connected to an active and registered SIM. The PTA said this helps protect chats, contacts and account access. If users do not take action, they may face sudden logouts and lose control of their accounts.
The PTA said the issue is about digital identity, not just mobile service. It explained that a mobile number is now an important part of a person’s digital identity. Accounts using invalid or inactive SIMs may lose access to personal data, including chats, media, contacts and recovery options.
The authority gave clear instructions for users. People using inactive SIMs should switch to an active number as soon as possible. Users should also complete biometric verification and SIM checks if required. The PTA advised visiting the nearest franchise or customer service center for assistance.
The advisory also mentioned several risk situations. A SIM may be deactivated after long inactivity or no recharge. A number may be registered in someone else’s name. A SIM may also fail biometric verification or re-verification.
The PTA said the advisory is part of its broader effort to improve SIM management. It said proper registration improves digital security and helps prevent fraud and illegal SIM use. The campaign encourages users to protect their WhatsApp and digital identity.
The PTA has not set a deadline for enforcement. However, it urged users to take action early to avoid service disruptions. Users can check SIM registration by sending their CNIC to 668, and they can also use the PTA digital assistant for help.
