The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has outlined several key challenges for the successful introduction of 5G technology in the country, focusing on significant financial investments, slow returns, and the availability of compatible devices.
In its report, the PTA stressed the need for extensive investment to upgrade networks and build necessary infrastructure, such as small cells, advanced antennas, and fiber-optic backhaul systems.
These upgrades are expected to place a heavy financial burden on telecom operators, particularly in a competitive market where consumers are price-sensitive. Additionally, operators are concerned that the return on investment may take time, leading to caution in committing large capital expenditures upfront.
To address these challenges, the PTA suggests that government incentives and private-public partnerships (PPPs) could be crucial in easing the financial strain and encouraging essential investments.
The digital divide remains a significant barrier, with urban areas likely to benefit sooner from 5G advancements compared to rural and remote regions. Extending 5G access to less populated areas is costly, further complicating its nationwide rollout. Additionally, the availability of 5G handsets remains a concern for widespread adoption.
Public awareness and education campaigns are necessary to increase understanding of 5G's benefits, as many consumers and businesses are unaware of its potential.
Misconceptions and health concerns about 5G could also hinder its acceptance. Transparent communication from the government and telecom operators will be crucial to promoting the technology and fostering consumer trust.
Despite these hurdles, the 5G rollout is underway, and Pakistan is working towards launching 5G mobile connectivity by mid-2025. The focus is also on developing backhaul infrastructure, essential for meeting the data and latency requirements of 5G networks.
PTA has been collaborating with telecom operators to upgrade infrastructure for this purpose and ensure that the telecom sector is prepared for 5G deployment.
