As Pakistan continues to grapple with internet-related challenges throughout the year, the government has set an ambitious target for 2025, focusing on improved broadband access and higher connectivity speeds.
"Year of 5G," 2025 is expected to witness a leap in broadband performance, with plans to achieve average internet speeds of 50 to 100 Mbps and expand Fibre-To-The-Site (FTTS) coverage to 60%.
Amer Shahzad, Director General (DG) Licensing, revealed this goal during the National Broadband Network Forum 2024, organized by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with Huawei.
Shahzad highlighted that a 5G spectrum auction is planned for April 2025, paving the way for next-generation broadband technology in Pakistan.
Currently, Fixed Broadband (FBB) penetration in Pakistan remains below 2%. However, Shahzad expressed optimism that this could increase to 20% within five years.
Additionally, he projected broadband speeds, currently averaging 15 Mbps, to reach 50 to 100 Mbps in 2025. FTTS coverage, presently at 20%, is also expected to triple, reaching 60%.
These targets underline the government’s commitment to transforming Pakistan's digital landscape and enhancing nationwide internet connectivity.
