Yesterday, NASA released updated facts about the asteroid 2024 YR4, suggesting that there's a possibility it could collide with the Moon. According to NASA reports, the current possibility stands at about 4%, which, while low, remains concerning for the Moon’s protection.
The final situation will become clearer next year in February, when the asteroid’s precise position can be measured. Specialists warn that if 2024 YR4 continues on its current trajectory, it could hit the Moon in 2032.
What Could Happen If the Asteroid Hits the Moon?
If a collision takes place, the damage could be severe. The impact could affect not just the Moon, but also objects orbiting Earth and surrounding space structures.In February 2026, the James Webb Space Telescope will closely take a look at this orbital object for extra accurate data. NASA has warned that the possibility of a collision should suddenly rise to 30 percent at that point.

This asteroid was discovered at the end of 2024 and was initially considered one of the most dangerous space rocks, probably heading toward Earth. At that point, the risk was estimated at 3 percent, but later observations confirmed it posed little danger to our planet.
However, a new concern has emerged: 2024 YR4, roughly 50–100 meters in diameter—about the size of a football field—may be on a direction that could bring it into a collision course with the Moon.
