Florida floods threaten to wash out Pakistan's T20 World Cup hopes

Florida floods threaten to wash out Pakistan's T20 World Cup hopes

  • Ireland to play USA in crucial T20 World Cup match.
  • Severe flood warning in Florida could disrupt the match.
  • Azhar Ali urges ICC to relocate matches from Florida.
Today, Ireland is set to compete against the United States in a pivotal T20 World Cup 2024 Group A match at the Central Broward Park in Lauderhill, Florida.

However, the match could be disrupted by rain due to a severe flood warning in Florida.

Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, has also declared a state of emergency in Broward County, where the cricket stadium is located.

If the match is cancelled due to rain, Ireland, Canada, and Pakistan will be disqualified from the T20 World Cup 2024 before reaching the Super 8 stage. On the other hand, the USA will advance to the next round along with India, who have already secured their place in the Super 8.

According to The Weather Channel, there is a high likelihood of thunderstorms during today’s match between Ireland and the USA. The match is scheduled to start at 10:30am local time.

Weather forecast in Lauderhill, Florida, on June 14:

10 AM: 64% chance of rain

11 AM: 70% chance of rain

12 PM: 64% chance of rain (Thunderstorms expected)

1 PM: 52% chance of rain (Scattered thunderstorms expected)

2 PM: 66% chance of rain (Thunderstorms expected)

To guarantee a result, each innings must play a minimum of five overs. Additionally, the two teams will have an extra 90 minutes to compensate for any weather-related delays.

Following today’s match, two more significant Group A matches are planned to take place in Florida in the upcoming days. India will play against Canada on Saturday, and Pakistan will face Ireland on Sunday.

Pakistan has participated in three matches in the T20 World Cup 2024 and has only won one against Canada. The journey to the Super 8s for Pakistan is challenging but not unattainable.

The following outcomes of Group A teams will secure Pakistan’s spot in the Super 8s stage of the T20 World Cup 2024:

June 14: USA vs Ireland: — Ireland win

June 15: Canada vs India — India win

June 16: Ireland vs Pakistan — Pakistan win

If all the matches yield the same results as listed above, then Pakistan will accumulate four points in four games. India will have eight points, and the USA will have the same points as Pakistan. At the end of the group-stage games, Canada and Ireland will each have two points.

Despite being on par with the USA in terms of points, Pakistan will advance to the Super 8 due to the negligible difference in the net run-rate between the two teams.

Earlier, Azhar Ali, the former captain of Pakistan, has called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate the T20 World Cup matches from Florida.

“Viewing the circumstances in Florida, it is looking like the matches won’t take place. ICC must take action, knowing many matches will get affected and shift to another venue,” he stated on a local news channel.

“Even if two matches take place at a single venue. I am sure the teams involved would have contacted ICC, asking to shift the games,” he added.
