McGregor was slated to return to UFC this year, but plans changed when Dana White announced Alex Pereira vs Jamahal Hill as the main event for UFC 300.
Nonetheless, the fighter known as the Notorious is eagerly awaiting his return and has expressed his enthusiasm for stepping back into the octagon.
“I’m eager for [a return],” McGregor shared with Swedish media outlet, Moviezine. “We’re in the first quarter of 2024, there’s still a good chunk of the year left.”
“I’ve got two fights left on my contract,” Conor McGregor elaborated. “Negotiations are ongoing.”
It’s important to recall that McGregor’s last appearance in the octagon was during his bout against Dustin Poirier, after which he was sidelined for nearly two years due to a severe leg fracture at UFC 264 in July 2021.
There were speculations that McGregor might go up against Michael Chandler at UFC 296, as the two had been engaging in off-field confrontations for most of the previous year. However, this did not materialize as the Notorious was unable to comply with UFC’s six-month mandatory drug testing policy, leading to White announcing Leon Edwards vs Colby Covington as the headline event for the year’s final UFC show.
It’s noteworthy that McGregor has lost three of his last four fights, including consecutive losses to Poirier at UFC 257 and 264, and a notable submission defeat to the undefeated UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 on October 7, 2018.
During his prime, the Irish fighter claimed two UFC titles and achieved eight impressive knockouts. His fastest knockout victory was against Jose Aldo in December 2015, where he knocked Aldo out in a mere 13 seconds.
In his UFC career, the 35-year-old remained unbeaten in his initial seven fights from 2013 to 2015. His first defeat was handed to him by Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in March 2016.
