Pakistan's leadership has extended congratulations to Donald Trump on his inauguration for a second term as the 47th president of the United States, expressing hope for stronger bilateral relations between the two nations under his new administration.
Trump’s inauguration ceremony, held at the US Capitol Rotunda, was attended by prominent global figures. At 78, Trump became the first US president in modern history to win a second term after losing the White House. He took the oath of office after his vice president, JD Vance.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took to X to convey his congratulations to Trump, stating, "Warm congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on his assumption of office as the 47th President of the United States. I look forward to working with him to strengthen the enduring Pakistan-US partnership." He added that both countries have worked together closely in the past to foster peace and prosperity and will continue to do so moving forward, wishing Trump success in his second term.
Former President Asif Ali Zardari also congratulated Trump and wished him well in his new role, as reported by the PPP media cell.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif appeared on Geo News’ “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath,” praising Trump's inaugural address as "constructive." He commended Trump’s commitment to acting as a peacemaker, which gives hope that the US may change its previous role of instigator. Asif noted that Pakistan's foreign policy remains balanced, with strong relations with China, Russia, Central Asia, and Iran.
When asked about potential pressure from the Trump administration regarding the imprisoned founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Asif responded confidently, saying that Pakistan is prepared to handle any such situation. He emphasized Pakistan's strong diplomatic ties and presence in Washington, suggesting that the US would not take drastic actions concerning Imran Khan.
Donald Trump, 78, was sworn in at 12:01pm ET (1701 GMT) by Chief Justice John Roberts to "preserve, protect, and defend" the US Constitution. His vice president, JD Vance, took the oath just before him.
In his first hours as president, Trump is expected to sign numerous executive orders, including a series of 10 focused on border security and immigration, which have been top priorities for him.
Trump’s return to office marks a remarkable political comeback after surviving two impeachment trials, a felony conviction, two assassination attempts, and an indictment over attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
