During a budget session led by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Mustafa Kamal observed that while those presenting the budget typically praise it, the opposition tends to criticize it. He highlighted that members of the assembly have alternated between sitting on the opposition and government benches.
Kamal noted that the same type of budget is presented each year and that the current federal budget is ordinary, with half of its funds originating from the IMF and other countries. He suggested that Pakistan should declare an economic emergency. Kamal proposed that political leaders such as Nawaz Sharif, Asif Zardari, and Fazlur Rehman should take the lead, suggesting that each of them contribute Rs 1,000 to help pay off the country's debt.
Kamal further suggested that Nawaz Sharif should donate his Raiwind estate, PTI founder should donate Bani Gala, and Asif Zardari should donate Bilawal House. He urged those present to commit 25% of their properties to Pakistan and recommended that assembly members contribute 25% of their salaries.
He also proposed that all retired military officers and current generals should each donate Rs 50 crore to the nation. He mentioned that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) could collect Rs 13,000 billion in taxes but stressed that the situation is dire and requires more than just minor adjustments; significant intervention is necessary.
Kamal emphasized that the government currently pays electricity companies in dollars and suggested that it should renegotiate these contracts. He also pointed out that despite claims of improving peace in Karachi, street crime remains uncontrolled. He credited the city's youth for maintaining peace and criticized the government for its uneven treatment of different political groups, noting that while the government has taken harsh actions against some, it has been more lenient with others, referencing the treatment of Rana Sanaullah and the missing individuals associated with his party.
Kamal concluded by stating that Karachi has the potential to lift Pakistan out of its economic difficulties and emphasized the need for a collective effort across the country.
