Lahore: India has once again released water into the Sutlej River, causing a low-level flood at the Ganda Singh Wala headworks, the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) reported on Monday.
According to the FFD, the water inflow in the Sutlej has surged to 68,000 cusecs after India discharged water from upstream. Just two days ago, the water level at Ganda Singh Wala was recorded at 28,000 cusecs.
On Saturday, the Director General of PDMA Punjab warned that more rainfall is expected across the province, along with the possible release of additional water from India. Speaking to the media in Lahore, he said that flooding could occur in the catchment areas of major rivers.
He added that India might release more water into the Sutlej and Ravi rivers, potentially sending about 35,000 cusecs into the Ravi alone.
Heavy monsoon rains and India’s earlier release of water into the Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi rivers have already caused severe flooding in Punjab, resulting in significant loss of life and property.
