Islamabad: Heavy rainfall in Islamabad and surrounding areas triggered severe flooding on the Islamabad Motorway on Wednesday, causing widespread traffic disruptions and posing serious safety concerns for commuters.
Floodwater rapidly overflowed onto the motorway lanes, submerging large sections of the road and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. Eyewitnesses reported long queues of cars and public transport vehicles stuck for hours, as emergency response teams struggled to manage the chaos.
According to officials from the National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP), the flooding was caused by an overflow of nearby drains and nullahs due to intense downpours that began early morning. “Our teams are on-site, guiding traffic and working with local authorities to divert vehicles and ensure public safety,” a spokesperson said.
Rescue teams and police personnel distributed water and offered basic assistance to stranded passengers while heavy machinery was dispatched to drain the water. However, slow drainage and continued rainfall hampered relief efforts.
The Meteorological Department has issued further rain alerts for the region, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant. Authorities are also assessing the risk of more urban flooding in low-lying areas of the capital.
Motorists have been advised to monitor weather and traffic updates before using the motorway.
