6 common medications that can trigger ‘Acne’ breakouts, experts say

Acne can be managed with topical treatments while continuing the necessary medication

Many people notice unexpected acne after starting a new medication or supplement, even when they are otherwise feeling better.

Dermatologists say certain drugs can affect the skin by increasing oil production, changing hormones, or triggering inflammation.

Experts explain that medication related breakouts often appear quickly, sometimes within one to two weeks of starting treatment. The acne may show up as red bumps, cysts, or uniform clusters of inflamed spots across the face, chest, shoulders, or back.

Steroid medications, including prednisone, are a common cause of acne flare ups. They can increase oil production in the skin, leading to inflamed breakouts on the upper body.

Some birth control pills or hormone based therapies may trigger acne, especially those containing progestin. However, combination pills with estrogen are more likely to improve skin in many cases.

Medications used for mood disorders, such as lithium, can also lead to breakouts. Doctors say the exact cause is not fully understood, but it may involve increased inflammation in the skin.

Even acne treatments like isotretinoin can cause a temporary worsening of breakouts at the start, often called a “purge” phase before improvement begins.

Drugs used for autoimmune conditions may also trigger acne in some patients, although researchers are still studying why this happens. High doses of vitamin B12 and whey protein have also been linked to acne in some people.

Doctors advise patients not to stop any prescribed medication without medical guidance. Instead, they recommend consulting a healthcare provider if breakouts become severe, painful, or persistent. In many cases, acne can be managed with topical treatments while continuing the necessary medication.
