Sydney: A 60-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly firing up to 100 bullets at random in a busy Sydney suburb on Sunday evening, injuring at least 20 people, according to New South Wales Police.
The dramatic incident unfolded in Croydon Park, in Sydney's Inner West, where the gunman reportedly opened fire on passing vehicles and responding officers between 7:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. local time.
One man, suffering from a gunshot wound, transported himself to a hospital and remains in serious condition. Nineteen others were treated for injuries caused by shrapnel and shattered glass, several of whom were hospitalized.
“This was a serious and terrifying event,” said NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon. “Thankfully, there were no fatalities, but the potential for loss of life was significant.”
Police said they recovered two rifles at the scene after locating the suspect in a unit above a business. He was arrested without further incident.
Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry confirmed the suspect fired "anywhere between 50 and 100 shots" during the attack. Authorities said the gunman appeared to have no known links to terrorism or gang activity, and the motive remains under investigation.
