  • Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directs new tariffs for solar electricity in Pakistan.
  • The government will terminate the existing net-metering system for solar users.
  • Solar system users will face fixed monthly charges under the new policy.
In a significant policy shift, the federal government, under the guidance of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has decided to implement new tariffs for solar electricity. This decision marks a departure from the existing net metering system, signaling a strategic move towards reshaping the solar energy landscape in Pakistan.

Key Highlights of the Policy Changes:

  1. End of Net Metering: The current net metering system, allowing solar users to sell excess electricity back to the grid at the same rate they purchased it, will be discontinued. This shift aims to introduce a more structured approach to solar energy utilization.
  2. Fixed Monthly Charges: Solar system users will now be subject to fixed monthly charges. This measure is intended to streamline costs and ensure a more balanced and sustainable approach to solar energy consumption.
  3. New Tariff Categories: Separate tariff categories for purchasing and selling solar electricity will be introduced. This move reflects the government's commitment to establishing a fair and sustainable pricing structure in the solar energy sector.
  4. 600 MW Solar Power Plant: In a strategic collaboration, the government has finalized plans to establish a 600 MW solar power plant in partnership with Saudi Arabian investors. Noteworthy for its intergovernmental nature and exemption from the bidding process, this project signifies a significant leap forward in bolstering Pakistan's solar energy capacity.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the relevant authorities to prepare a summary of these decisions promptly. This directive underscores the government's dedication to revitalizing the solar energy sector and promoting renewable energy sources across the nation.

These policy changes are poised to impact both current and future solar energy users in Pakistan. The objective is to foster a more efficient, equitable, and sustainable energy system. As the government progresses with these initiatives, stakeholders are advised to stay informed and adapt to the forthcoming regulatory adjustments in the solar energy sector.
