KARACHI: A mild earthquake shook parts of Karachi on Wednesday morning, with tremors felt in the Malir area. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake measured 3.2 on the Richter scale.
The quake occurred at 9:34am, with its epicenter located roughly seven kilometres northwest of Malir and at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. No reports of casualties or property loss have been received so far.
The incident comes days after a 5.5 magnitude quake struck Islamabad and several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, contributing to rising concern over regional seismic activity.
“Karachi has seen a noticeable pattern of low-intensity tremors in recent months. Our teams are monitoring the situation closely,” a PMD official said.
Back in June, the city experienced an unusual spike in seismic events, recording over 50 tremors within a single month. Seismologists believe this increase is tied to shifts along local fault lines.
Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider pointed to the reactivation of the Landhi Fault Line as the likely cause. “After remaining inactive for decades, this fault is now going through a phase of adjustment. These minor tremors are part of a natural geological process,” he noted.
While the recent activity has not caused any damage, officials have advised citizens to stay informed, follow basic safety protocols, and avoid unnecessary alarm. The PMD and emergency services continue to monitor the situation around the clock.
