ROME: In a major disruption to one of Europe’s most anticipated music events of the year, Italian authorities have cancelled scheduled concerts by Kanye West (Ye) and Travis Scott, citing serious security risks, potential public unrest, and overwhelming crowd pressure expected in northern Italy.
The two high-profile performances were planned for July at the RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia, a venue capable of hosting more than 103,000 spectators, and were expected to draw one of the largest back-to-back crowds in the country’s recent entertainment history.
Travis Scott was set to perform on July 17, followed by Kanye West, who was scheduled to headline the Hellwat Festival on July 18.
Reggio Emilia Prefect Salvatore Angieri announced the cancellation on Saturday, describing the decision as unavoidable due to what he called a “concrete risk” linked to large-scale crowd movement within a short 24-hour period, combined with rising concerns over potential demonstrations targeting Kanye West’s appearance.

His actions have previously led to concert cancellations and bans across several European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, and Poland.
Public pressure in Reggio Emilia had intensified in recent weeks, with Jewish community groups, anti-fascist organisations, trade unions, and political leaders openly demanding that West’s performance be stopped, warning that it could trigger protests and disrupt public order in the city.
Travis Scott’s show was also withdrawn as part of the same security assessment. However, authorities clarified that his cancellation was not linked to any political controversy, but rather to safety planning concerns related to managing two consecutive large-scale events in the same venue.
The decision has also revived global attention on Scott’s history with large crowds, particularly the 2021 Astroworld tragedy in Houston, where a crowd crush resulted in multiple fatalities and raised ongoing concerns about concert safety standards.
Despite the cancellations, organisers of the Hellwat Festival have stated they are attempting to relocate Kanye West’s July 18 performance to another venue near Reggio Emilia, potentially under a different administrative jurisdiction, although no official confirmation has been made so far.
The cancellations come shortly after West launched his European summer tour with a massive concert at Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium, which reportedly drew more than 118,000 fans from multiple countries, marking one of the biggest live audiences of his career.
Travis Scott also joined West on stage during the Istanbul performance, as both artists continue their recent musical collaboration, further intensifying global interest in their joint appearances.
West is still scheduled to continue his European tour with planned shows in the Netherlands, Albania, and Prague, but uncertainty remains over future dates as authorities across the region reassess security and public safety concerns surrounding large-scale events.
