Disney’s ‘Moana’ live-action film builds hype with powerful final trailer

Catherine Lagaʻaia debuts as Moana alongside returning Dwayne Johnson as Maui.

The final trailer for Disney’s upcoming live-action Moana has been released, offering an exciting glimpse into a grander and more action-packed ocean adventure as Moana and Maui set out beyond the reef to uncover the mysteries of the open sea.

The film stars newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, alongside Dwayne Johnson, who returns as the powerful demigod Maui.

The trailer blends nostalgia with fresh cinematic scale, recreating iconic moments from the 2016 animated classic while introducing new high-energy sequences, including an extended version of Maui’s hit song “You’re Welcome” and vibrant tribal dance performances.

Fans also get a closer look at beloved characters returning in live-action form, including Pua the pig and Heihei the chicken, along with the fierce Kakamora and the towering lava monster that challenge Moana and Maui on their journey across the ocean.

Adding to the excitement, Jemaine Clement reprises his role as the dramatic giant crab Tamatoa, bringing back one of the franchise’s most memorable villains.

The cast also features John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, completing Moana’s powerful family storyline.

Directed by Thomas Kail, the live-action adaptation reimagines Disney’s beloved 2016 musical, which became a global box office sensation and later expanded with a 2024 sequel.

The project was first announced in April 2023 and is produced by Auli‘i Cravalho, the original voice of Moana, along with acclaimed composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, who helped shape the franchise’s iconic music.

With breathtaking visuals, emotional depth, and high-stakes adventure teased in the trailer, anticipation is building ahead of the film’s theatrical release on July 10.
