Washington: The United States has announced its withdrawal from UNESCO due to Palestinian state recognition and expresses discontent.
The U.S. government accuses UNESCO of promoting anti-Israel sentiments and has cited this as a reason for its withdrawal.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that continuing membership in UNESCO, an organization related to education, science, and culture, is not in America's national interest.
The U.S. claims that UNESCO fosters policies that promote social and cultural division. The organization also advocates for an ideological agenda that contradicts America's "America First" foreign policy.
Spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized that UNESCO's recognition of a Palestinian state is a serious issue that opposes U.S. policy and has contributed to anti-Israel sentiments within the organization.
She clarified that America's participation in international organizations will be based on policies that promote American interests.
The withdrawal from UNESCO will take effect from December 21, 2026. The U.S. has officially informed UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay of its decision.
This marks the second time that the Trump administration has withdrawn from UNESCO.
It is noteworthy that in October 2011, UNESCO admitted Palestine as a member, prompting the Obama administration to immediately suspend $60 million in U.S. aid to the organization.
