Sri Lanka has been battling extreme destruction for the final weeks as relentless rains, floods, and landslides continue to wreak havoc across the nation. The death toll has now risen to 31, even as 14 people are still reported missing.
According to private media, more than 4,000 people in 17 districts have been badly affected. Since November 17, intense weather has flooded low-lying areas, washed away roads, and damaged hundreds of houses.
Rescue groups are working nonstop in the worst-hit regions; however, non-stop rainfall and strong winds are slowing down relief efforts. The Disaster Management Centre confirmed that ten people have also been injured, and transportation in a few regions remains completely cut off.

In Batticaloa district, rainfall has crossed an alarming 300 millimeters — an unusually high amount. Officials say the continuing low-pressure system over the country is the main cause of the intense downpour and stormy winds, which may cause more landslides in the coming days.
The government has issued a red alert for landslides in 8 districts and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, move to safer, higher ground, and remain ready for immediate evacuation.
Relief agencies warn that while rescue operations continue, the situation remains critical, and more heavy rains are expected soon.
