Russian individual anctioned over Australia's worst data breach

Australia has named and sanctioned a Russian man, Aleksandr Ermakov, for his involvement in the country's worst data breach, which occurred in late 2022. The breach targeted Medibank, the largest health insurer in Australia, resulting in the theft of personal information from 9.7 million Australians.  He posted the Sensitive documents online, including abortion records.

These cyber sanctions, marking a first in Australia, involve financial penalties and a travel ban imposed on Mr. Ermakov. While little information has been disclosed about him, Australian intelligence authorities assert that he is associated with the notorious Russian cyber-crime gang REvil, known for its involvement in cyber-attacks across Europe, the US, and the UK.

On Tuesday, Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil announced the measures, describing the Medibank hack as "the single most devastating cyber-attack we have experienced as a nation."

"Literally millions of people having personal data about themselves, their family members, taken from them and cruelly placed online for others to see," she said.

"These people are cowards and scumbags... we'll unveil who you are and we'll make sure you're accountable."
