Police confirm that eight people killed in Indian Kashmir gun battles

Police confirmed on Sunday that two soldiers and six suspected militants were killed in two separate gunbattles in Indian-administered Kashmir. Kashmir police Inspector General Vidhi Kumar Birdi informed the news agency that authorities in the disputed territory had conducted two different operations in villages located in the Kulgam district.

Birdi reported that clashes in Modergram and Frisal Chinnigam villages had resulted in the deaths of two members of the security forces.

“We have retrieved the bodies of two terrorists from Modergram, and four others from Frisal Chinnigam,” said Birdi.

This incident marks the latest uptick of attacks in the disputed territory. Both India and Pakistan claim Muslim-majority Kashmir in full and have engaged in three wars for control of the Himalayan region. Since 1989, rebel groups have waged an insurgency, seeking either independence for the territory or its merger with Pakistan.

The conflict has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians, soldiers, and rebels. In June, a gunman opened fire on a bus carrying nine Indian Hindu pilgrims from a shrine in the southern Reasi area, killing them and injuring dozens.

It was one of the deadliest attacks in years and marked the first on Hindu pilgrims in Kashmir since 2017, when gunmen ambushed a bus, killing seven people.
