TEHRAN: Anti-government protests in Iran have intensified, spreading to more than 100 cities across the country, according to international human rights organizations.
Late-night marches were reported in Tehran and Mashhad, where protesters took to the streets against the government. The death toll from the unrest has risen to 47, including several security personnel, while nearly 2,500 people have been arrested so far.
Authorities have once again suspended internet services nationwide amid the escalating protests. Meanwhile, Turkey has cancelled all flights from Istanbul to Tehran due to the deteriorating situation.
Iranian media released footage from Kermanshah showing armed individuals firing weapons during protests, with masked men seen shooting amid the unrest.
Addressing the nation, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the United States of having “blood on its hands,” claiming that certain disruptive elements are damaging public property to please US President Donald Trump.
He stated that Iran would not retreat from dealing with saboteurs, stressing that while protest is a legitimate right, violence and vandalism are unacceptable.
Khamenei added that the government is willing to engage in dialogue with peaceful protesters but described talks with violent agitators as pointless.
Iran has also urged the United Nations to protect state sovereignty and prevent foreign interference. In a statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said U.S. remarks on Iran’s internal affairs constitute interference and deception.
