The train derailed near the town of Gonda while traveling from the northern city of Chandigarh to Dibrugarh, a town in northeastern Assam state, causing some coaches to overturn.
Television images depicted scores of passengers standing next to derailed coaches, awaiting rescuers.
In June, a cargo train collided with a passenger train in the eastern state of West Bengal, resulting in the deaths of nine people and injuring dozens more. Investigators attributed the collision to the cargo train's driver, who disregarded a signal. The driver, among the deceased, caused the collision.
Last year, a train crash in eastern India claimed the lives of over 280 people, marking one of the country’s deadliest accidents in decades.
Every day, more than 12 million people ride 14,000 trains across India, covering 64,000 kilometers (40,000 miles) of track. Despite government efforts to improve rail safety, several hundred accidents occur annually, with most attributed to human error or outdated signaling equipment.
