Microsoft has officially exited the Pakistani market after a quarter-century of operations, marking a significant milestone in the country's tech landscape.
The company recently informed its remaining staff of the decision to wind down its local activities entirely. Founding Country Manager Jawwad Rehman reflected on the departure, describing it as the “end of an era.”
Rehman, who led Microsoft's efforts in Pakistan for seven years, emphasized the company's commitment to the country’s growth, stating, “It wasn’t just a job—it was a calling.” He highlighted efforts to enhance digital infrastructure, build local teams, and foster partnerships that benefited Pakistani youth.
Throughout its tenure, Microsoft contributed to Pakistan’s digital development by establishing hundreds of computer labs in underserved regions, aiming to bridge the digital divide.
The company's exit occurs amid increasing economic challenges and political instability in Pakistan, which have prompted several multinational corporations to reassess their presence in the country.
Microsoft had previously considered expanding in Pakistan in 2022 but redirected its plans to Vietnam due to the prevailing political unrest.
