Meta has announced plans to build a massive undersea cable spanning 40,000 kilometers, aimed at enhancing global internet connectivity. The company, which already handles 10% of fixed and 22% of mobile internet traffic worldwide, is set to invest over $10 billion in this ambitious project.
This cable will be Meta’s first fully owned and operated global network, designed to strengthen its infrastructure and support the demands of its emerging AI technologies.
Project Details
The undersea cable will create a dedicated data pipeline, following a unique "W" route. Starting from the US east coast, it will connect to India via South Africa and return to the US west coast through Australia.This advanced infrastructure aims to improve and stabilize internet speeds for millions globally. While construction has begun, the project is in its early stages and will require several years to complete.
One significant hurdle is the limited availability of cable-laying ships, which are both expensive and booked months in advance. Meta plans to address this by laying the cable in segments.
A detailed announcement, including the route, capacity, and purpose of the cable, is expected in early 2025.
