During Tuesday’s match against Bangladesh, Afghanistan’s opening batsmen Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz set a new record for the highest partnership runs in a single T20 World Cup.

The pair from Afghanistan have accumulated 442 runs in the 2024 T20 World Cup, surpassing the 411 runs set by Pakistan’s Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in 2021.

Against Bangladesh, Gurbaz and Zadran put together a 59-run opening stand.

Most runs as a pair in a T20 World Cup edition (any wicket)

442 - Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (AFG, 2024)

411 - Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan (PAK, 2021)

368 - Jos Buttler, Alex Hales (ENG, 2022)

335 - Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden (AUS, 2007)

321 - KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma (IND, 2021)

Choosing to bat first, Afghanistan scored 115-5 in their 20 overs, following an effective bowling performance by Bangladesh.

Rishad Hossain stood out among the bowlers with 3-26 in four overs, taking key wickets including Gurbaz, Zadran, and Gulbadin Naib.

Gurbaz led the scoring for Afghanistan with 43 runs off 55 balls, hitting three fours and one six.

India, England, and South Africa have already secured their semi-final spots in the current tournament, with the last spot to be determined by the outcome of the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh match.
